13 WCBA players make Big Shots Carolina all-star team

WCBA teams had a lot of success at the Big Shots Carolina Live tournament in the final April live period, and a total of 13 WCBA players made the all-star team from the tournament.

At the 11th Grade division, WCBA Blue defeated WCBA White in the championship. Four players from the Blue team were named to the all-star roster

Phillip Burwell, a 6-foot-1 guard from Millbrook High School, scored in double-figures in three of the four games over the weekend. An 18-point performance in a 76-31 win over the Fort Mill Knicks was his high for the tournament, but Burwell led the team in scoring with 14 points in the championship game against WCBA White.

6-foot-4 shooting guard Jett Fortuny of Cary High School led the team in scoring in the tournament. Fortuny had games of 17, 15, 19 and 13 points on the weekend. He is averaging 18.2 points per game this season for WCBA Blue.

Marcus Metcalf, an athletic 6-foot-1 guard from Wayne Country Day, was also named to the all-star team from the WCBA 11th Blue squad. Metcalf, who averages just under 10 points per game on the season, had a 22-point performance against the South Carolina Kings in an 80-28 win in the first game of the tournament.

Heritage High School point guard Dyson Pender was the final WCBA Blue player to make the all-star team. Pender stands at 5-foot-11 and scored in double-figures in two of the four games. Pender scored 16 points against the Kings and 15 points against Big Shots Elite Florida.

WCBA 11th White also had four players on the all-star team: Ricky Clemons, Jaren Ellerbe, Donovan Evans and Jaylin Parker - all unsigned seniors.

Clemons and Parker are both at Rolesville High School. Clemons was in double-figures in three-of-four games, scoring 11, 17 and 19 points. He was held to six points in the semifinals against Team FLY. Parker was also in double-figures in three games, scoring 18, 14 and 16 points. Parker was held to five points in the championship game against WCBA Blue.

Ellerbe and Evans both go to Garner High School. Ellerbe leads the team in scoring. He had a 30-point game in the championship game and a 23-point game against TLBA. He also scored 19 and 18 points in the other two games. Evans was in double-figures in three games. He scored 13 points against the Carolina Defenders, 14 points against TLBA and 23 points against Team  FLY. Evans was held to seven points in the championship game.

WCBA 10th Blue was the runner-up in the 10th grade tournament and was also represented on the all-star roster.

Khalil Marshall, a freshman at Pender High School playing up with the 10th grade team, was one of two players named to the all-star roster. Marshall scored in double-figures in each of the four games with totals of 10, 20, 15 and 10 points. He hit the game-winning half-court shot at the buzzer in overtime of the semifinal game to beat Stackhouse Elite.

Point guard Tyler Gill of Millbrook High School was also selected to the all-star team. Gill had games of 12, 16, 13 and eight points for WCBA White. His high of 16 points came against Team Xplosion.

Three players from WCBA 10th White were named to the all-star roster - Kyler Bowden, Chase Edwards and Henry Richardson.

Bowden, a 5-foot-10 guard from Heritage High School, had games of 16 and 22 points. His 22-point performance against Big Shots Elite NC included 10 made field goals, four of which came from beyond the arc.

Edwards, a 6-foot-2 guard who is home schooled, scored 15 points in the opening game against the Lake Norman Hornets, his high for the tournament.

Richardson scored in double-figures in all three games, including 20-point performances against  the Lake Norman Hornets and Big Shots Elite NC. He scored 18 points against the Carolina Warriors.

All WCBA high school teams will compete in the Big Shots Team Loaded tournament this weekend in Richmond, Va.
