Updates from second April live period

High school teams from the Wake County Basketball Association are competing in live events Apr. 27-29 in Rock Hill, S.C., and Greensboro, N.C.

WCBA 11th Blue, 11th White, 10th Blue and 10th White are playing in the Big Shots Carolina tournament in Rock Hill, while 9th Blue and 9th White are playing in the Phenom Hoop Report Grassroots TOC.

SUNDAY GAMES

  • WCBA 11th Blue 72, WCBA 11th White 66: WCBA vs. WCBA in the gold championship game at the Big Shots Carolina Live tournament went to the Blue team in a close game. WCBA Blue was led in scoring by Phillip Burwell and Elijah Shabazz, each scoring 14 points in the game. Burwell also connected on a pair of three-point baskets. Jett Fortuny added 13 points for the Blue team. Marcus Metcalf contributed nine points and Adrian Scarborough (2018) scored eight points. The White team was led in scoring by Jaren Ellerbe's (2018) 30 points on 13 made field goals. Ricky Clemons (2018) added 19 points for the White team. Both teams will return to play next weekend at Big Shots Team Loaded in Richmond, Va. [BOX SCORE: BLUE | WHITE]
  • Big Shots Elite NC 54, WCBA 10th Blue 50: WCBA 10th Blue dropped the gold championship game against Big Shots Elite NC in the Big Shots Carolina Live tournament on Sunday. Adam Carey was the leading scorer for WCBA, posting 11 points on five made field goals. Khalil Marshall added 10 points for WCBA. Carey and Marshall were the only double-digit scorers for WCBA, but Tyler Gill added eight points and Jalen Corprew scored seven points. WCBA 10th Blue returns to action next weekend in Big Shots Team Loaded in Richmond, Va. [BOX SCORE]
  • WCBA 11th Blue 83, Big Shots Elite Florida 70: WCBA 11th Blue will play for a gold championship on Sunday after beating Big Shots Elite Florida, 83-70. Five players were in double-figures on Sunday, led by Jett Fortuny's 19 points and 10 rebounds. Dyson Pender added 15 points for WCBA, while Phillip Burwell and Elijah Shabazz each scored 12 points. Marcus Metcalf scored 10 points for WCBA. Isaiah Lewis and Adrian Scarborough were not in double-figures, but scored eight and seven points respectively. The gold championship game against WCBA White is slated for 2:00 PM at Nation Ford, Ct. 1. [BOX SCORE]
  • WCBA 11th White 77, Team FLY 62: WCBA 11th White will face WCBA 11th Blue in the gold championship game after beating Team FLY, 77-62, on Sunday. Donovan Evans (2018) led the team in scoring with 23 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Jaren Ellerbe (2018) scored 18 points, connecting on seven field goals, while Jaylin Parker (2018) scored 16 points. The top-scoring juniors on the team included Andrew Carroll with seven points and Will Blackburn with five points. The gold championship game is scheduled for 2:00 PM at Nation Ford, Ct. 1.   • WCBA 10th Blue 58, Stackhouse Elite 55 (OT): Tyler Gill hit a three-pointer to tie the game and force overtime, then freshman Khalil Marshall drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer in overtime to lift WCBA 10th Blue past Stackhouse Elite, 58-55. Marshall and Gill led the team in scoring. Marshall, a freshman, scored 15 points on seven made field goals, while Gill posted 14 points on six made field goals. Adam Carey scored nine points in the game and David Butners added seven points. WCBA will face Big Shots Elite NC in the gold championship game at 2:00 PM at Nation Ford, Ct. 2. [BOX SCORE]
  • Boo Williams EYBL 72, WCBA 9th Blue 38: WCBA 9th Blue lost in the gold bracket championship at Phenom Grassroots TOC to Boo Williams EYBL. After hanging with Boo Williams in the first half, the team pulled away from WCBA in the second half. Jayvon Mercer continued his breakout tournament with a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. He was the only double-digit scorer in the game for WCBA. Colby Lynam scored six points, Malachi Barton and Chase Hakerem each scored five points. WCBA 9th Blue will play in Big Shots Team Loaded in Richmond, Va., next weekend. [BOX SCORE]
  • Big Shots Elite NC 85, WCBA 10th White 69: WCBA 10th White ended its weekend with a loss to Big Shots Elite NC on Sunday morning. Kyler Bowden and Henry Richardson continued their impressive showings on the weekend though. Bowden connected on 10 filed goals, including four three-pointers, posting 22 points in the game. Richardson scored eight field goals and two three-poitners, totaling 20 points. Alex Nunnally added 15 points in the game for WCBA, hitting four three-pointers of his own. Saturday Games

  • WCBA 11th Blue 76, Fort Mill Knicks 31: WCBA 11th Blue is in the gold bracket semifinals on Sunday after a convincing win over the Fort Mill Knicks on Saturday night. Phillip Burwell led the team in scoring with 18 points, including a pair of three-point baskets. Isaiah Lewis, who is a high school teammate of Burwell at Millbrook High School, scored 15 points, as did Jett Fortuny. Marcus Metcalf and Elijah Shabazz each scored eight points, while Dyson Pender posted seven points. WCBA 11th Blue will face Big Shots Elite Florida at 11:00 AM at Nation Ford, Ct. 2. [BOX SCORE]
  • WCBA 10th Blue 98, Team Xplosion 84: WCBA 10th Blue nearly hit the century mark against Team Xplosion, advancing to the gold bracket semifinals of the Big Shots Carolina tournament with a 98-84 win. David Butners posted 30 points in the win, including five made three-pointers. It's the most points any player has scored this season for WCBA 10th Blue. Khalil Marshall, a freshman playing up, scored 20 points in the game, while Tyler Gill posted 16 points. Brady Whilden scored 15 points in the win for WCBA. The team will face Stackhouse Elite in the gold semifinals at 10:00 AM at Nation Ford, Ct. 1. [BOX SCORE]
  • WCBA 11th White 90, TLBA 70: WCBA 11th White got big contributions from unsigned seniors en route to a 20-point win, giving the team a berth to the gold bracket semifinals on Sunday morning. Jaren Ellerbe (2018) led the team in scoring again with 23 points, including nine made field goals. Ricky Clemons (2018) scored 17 points, while Jaylin Parker (2018) and Donovan Evans (2018) each scored 14 points. Will Blackburn was the top performing junior, posting 13 points including two made three-pointers. Andrew Carroll added seven points for WCBA.   • WCBA 10th White 55, Carolina Warriors 53: WCBA 10th White continues its run in the gold bracket and will play in the semifinals on Sunday after a two-point win over the Carolina Warriors. Henry Richardson continued his strong tournament performance with 18 points against the Warriors. Kyler Bowden posted 16 points for WCBA, while Alex Nunnally posted nine points. WCBA 10th White will face Big Shots Elite NC in the gold semifinals on Sunday morning at 8:00 AM at Nation Ford, Ct. 2. [BOX SCORE]
  • WCBA 9th Blue 72, Team Felton 60: WCBA 10th Blue defeated Team Felton on Saturday to move to 3-0 in pool play and advance to the gold championship bracket of the Phenom Grassroots TOC. Scott Martin led WCBA in scoring with 23 points, including eight made field goals and seven made free throws. Jayvon Mercer scored 12 points for WCBA. Eight players scored in the game for WCBA.   • WCBA 11th Blue 81, SC Kings 28: WCBA 11th Blue dominated the SC Kings on Saturday in the opening game of the Big Shots Carolina tournament. Balanced scoring helped WCBA, led by athletic guard Marcus Metcalf's 22 points. Metcalf scored five three-point baskets in the win. Jett Fortuny also hit five three-pointers, totaling 17 points. Point guard Dyson Pender scored 16 points on seven made field goals, and Desmond Booze added 11 points. Elijah Shabazz scored eight points for WCBA.   • WCBA 11th White 80, Carolina Defenders Stanly County 48: WCBA 11th White opened Big Shots Carolina with a big win over the Carolina Defenders Stanly County, led by a group of unsigned seniors. Jaren Ellerbe (2018) led the team in scoring with 19 points, while Jaylin Parker (2018) scored 18 points. Donovan Evans (2018) and Ricky Clemons (2018) scored 13 and 11 points respectively. The top scoring 2019 players on the team included Will Blackburn with eight points and Andrew Carroll with seven points.   • WCBA 10th Blue 86, Hill City 32: WCBA 10th Blue had six players in double-figures in the opening round of the Big Shots Carolina tournament on Saturday en route to a 54-point win. Brady Whilden led the team in scoring with 16 points. David Butners added 14 points and Tyler Gill scored 12 points. Sam Hickman and Khalil Marshall each hit a pair of three-pointers en route to 10-point performances, while Jalen Corprew also scored 10 points in the game.   • WCBA 10th White 61, Lake Norman Hornets 50: WCBA 10th White picked up a win to start Big Shots Carolina, 61-50 over the Lake Norman Hornets. Henry Richardson led the team in scoring with 20 points on nine made field goals. Chase Edwards at 15 points and Alex Nunnally hit four three-pionters to scored 14 points.   • WCBA 9th Blue 77, NC ICE 60: WCBA 9th Blue won its second game of the Phenom Grassroots TOC with an impressive 17-point win over NC ICE on Saturday morning. Big man Jayvon Mercer continued his dominant performance in the tournament with 13 points on five made field goals. Scott Martin was the leading scorer though, posting 14 points on six made field goals in the game. Malachi Barton and Chase Hakerem were also in double-figures with 11 and 10 points respectively, and Stone Sewell scored nine points. Friday Games

  • WCBA 9th Blue 65, Charlotte Nets 54: WCBA 9th Blue opened the Phenom Grassroots TOC with a solid 11-point win over the Charlotte Nets on Friday night. Malachi Barton had a huge game with 15 points, setting the tone offensively for WCBA. He scored from three-point range, by attacking and at the free throw line. Big man Jayvon Mercer added 14 points for WCBA, while Chase Hakerem scored 11 points.
