Updates from first week of April live period

High school teams from the Wake County Basketball Association are competing in live events Apr. 20-22 in Spartanburg, S.C., and Atlanta, Ga.

WCBA 11th Blue and 10th Blue are playing in the Phenom Challenge in Spartanburg, while 9th Blue is playing in Big Shots Atlanta.

Sunday Games

  • WCBA 9th Blue 70, Big Shots Elite Atlanta 32: WCBA 9th Blue took home the silver championship at Big Shots Atlanta to open the live period with a 70-32 win over Big Shots Elite Atlanta on Sunday afternoon. There was a fairly balanced scoring attack from WCBA in the game. Colby Lynam led the team in scoring with 13 points on six made field goals. Jayvon Mercer scored 11 points for WCBA, while Jalen Rochelle poured in 10 points. Scott Martin & Malachi Barton each scored eight points in the game. WCBA 9th Blue will return to play next weekend in another live tournament when it travels to Greensboro for the Phenom Hoop Report Grassroots Tournament of Champions.   • Charlotte Nets 71, WCBA 10th Blue 59: Despite leading by 16 points in the second half, WCBA 10th Blue fell to Charlotte Nets after a huge Nets run late in the game. Forward Adam Carey led WCBA in scoring with 14 points in the game, hitting six field goals. His high school teammate, guard Tyler Gill, added 13 points. Both Carey and Gill attend Millbrook High School. Freshman Khalil Marshall scored nine points in the contest and David Butners added six points. This was the last game in the Phenom Challenge for WCBA 10th Blue. Saturday Games

  • WCBA 11th Blue 73, Sharp Shooters Elite 71 (OT): Ricky Clemons, an unsigned senior at Rolesville High School, hit the game-winner for WCBA 11th Blue and scored 22 points to lead the team to a win in the final game at the Phenom Challenge. Jett Fortuny, who has had a huge tournament, scored 21 points, including six three-point baskets. Elijah Shabazz scored nine points for WCBA. This was the final game in the tournament for WCBA 11th Blue. The team will travel to Big Shots Carolina in Rock Hill/Charlotte next week for the second live period weekend. [BOX SCORE]
  • WCBA 10th Blue 80, Team Vision NC 66: WCBA 10th Blue remains undefeated at the Phenom Challenge with an 80-66 win over Team Vision NC. Guard Tyler Gill led the team in scoring with 22 points, including a pair of three-pointers. David Butners added 17 points and Khalil Marshall scored 12 points. WCBA 10th Blue is now 3-0 in the tournament and returns to play on Sunday morning at 9:40 AM against the Charlotte Nets at Upward Stars Center, Ct. 4. [BOX SCORE]
  • PSB Elite 69, WCBA 11th Blue 56: WCBA 11th Blue lost a game for the first time in the Phenom Challenge in Spartanburg, falling to a very talented PSB Elite squad, 69-56. Jett Fortuny continued his live period tear with 21 points, including five made three-point baskets.  Fortuny was the only WCBA player in double-figures, but unsigned senior Ricky Clemons scored nine points, while Elijah Shabazz and Marcus Metcalf each scored eight points. Metcalf and Clemons each hit a pair of three-pointers. Guard Phillip Burwell led the team in rebounding with five boards. He also scored six points. [BOX SCORE]
  • WCBA 10th Blue 68, NC Red Storm 62: Another win for WCBA 10th Blue in the Phenom Challenge in Spartanburg, this  one a close win over fellow Raleigh team NC Red Storm. The shooting of David Butners and Sam Hickman helped lead the way. Both players hit a trio of three-point shots and scored 13 points in the game. Butners added six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Khalil Marshall added nine points, while Tyler Gill scored eight points. Jalen Corprew led the team in rebounding with seven, he also scored six points. Adam Carey brought in six rebounds of his own and scored five points.   • WCBA 9th Blue 2, Jackson Pride 0: WCBA 9th Blue picked up a win by forfeit in the second game at Big Shots Atlanta due to NCAA certification issue for Jackson Pride. The next game for WCBA 9th Blue will be the silver championship game at 1:00 PM on Sunday at Alpharetta High School, Ct. 2.
  • WCBA 11th Blue 74, High Point Havoc 73: A good shooting night helped WCBA 11th Blue to a one-point win over High Point Havoc in the Phenom Challenge on Saturday morning. Jett Fortuny shot the ball very well from the floor, hitting five three-pointers and leading the team with 19 points. The scoring was balanced though. Elijah Shabazz scored 12 points, so did Andrew Carroll, who hit four three-pointers. Marcus Metcalf was also in double-figures with 11 points in the game.   • Team Xplosion 70, WCBA 9th Blue  61: WCBA 9th Blue opened the Big Shots Atlanta Live tournament with a tough 70-61 loss to Team Xplosion. After WCBA led the whole game, Team Xplosion hit four three-pointers in the final 90 seconds to secure the win. Jalen Rochelle led WCBA in scoring with 16 points, including a pair of three-point baskets. Scott Martin was also in double-figures with 12 points. WCBA 9th Blue returns to play at 11:00 AM against Jackson Pride at Alpharetta High School, Ct. 3. [BOX SCORE]

Friday Games

  • WCBA 11th Blue 54, EA Prep-Gold 47: A big performance by Jett Fortuny helped WCBA 11th Blue to a hard fought win over EA Prep-Gold in the opening game of the Phenom Challenge. Fortuny hit a trio of three-point shots and tallied 22 points to lead WCBA in scoring. He was the only player in double-figures as the team struggled shooting from the floor. Unsigned senior Ricky Clemons scored eight points and Marcus Metcalf added seven points for WCBA. The team returns to action on Saturday at 9:40 AM against High Point Havoc at Upward Stars Center, Ct. 2. [BOX SCORE]
  • WCBA 10th Blue 91, Chattanooga Elite 53: WCBA's 10th Blue team opened the Phenom Challenge with a convincing 38-point win over Chattanooga Elite. Five different players scored in double-figures, led by David Butners' 18 points. Brady Whilen and Michael Boney each added 15 points in the game, while Sam Hickman and Tyler Gill scored 13 and 12 points respectively. WCBA 10th Blue returns to action on Saturday at 12 p.m. against NC Red Storm at Broome High School. [BOX SCORE]
