The Dorsey Family - Nolan, Alan, Michele, Cailin, Caroline, and Patrick
Alan Dorsey, a father of four very active children, passed away in October of 2016. He was a long time friend and teammate to many of us here at WCBA. Alan coached for several youth sports organizations and his coaching career included time as a highly regarded coach with our league. WCBA is honored to help the Dorsey family remember Alan’s life and his love of basketball.
Thanks to the generous donations of the Dorsey family and friends of our organization, WCBA will award an annual scholarship in Alan's memory to a high school senior who has participated in the WCBA Recreational League during his/her youth basketball career. The first annual scholarship will be in the amount of $1,000.00 and will be awarded this July, 2017. The criteria and instructions for applying are explained in this pages sidebar.
Alan’s wife Michele and their children, Cailin, Patrick, Nolan and Caroline have written their thoughts and comments on the scholarship:
Our dad, Alan Dorsey, loved basketball. His love for the game and for coaching brought him to WCBA. Every year, he looked forward to WCBA draft night and assembling a team that consisted of tough competitors who were ready to learn how to play basketball the right way. He wasn’t out there looking for the star, but instead for the kids who wanted to work hard, play defense, and make the extra pass. While he helped his teams win plenty of championships, the most important aspects of coaching were teaching, developing and caring for each of his players.
Our dad grew up in Williamsburg, VA where he was a star basketball player and soccer goalie at Lafayette High School. After a post-graduate year at Fork Union Military Academy, he played four years of basketball at James Madison University. His coaching career started at Georgia Southern University where he taught PE classes while earning in Masters in Sports Administration. As soon as we could run around, our dad was coaching whatever sport was in season. “Coach Dorsey” could be found in the dugout, on the soccer field, and always on the basketball court.
Our dad also cheered us from the sidelines of countess games and swim meets. We remember with great pride his ability to balance a positive attitude with an intense competitive spirit on and off the field. In our house, playing flag football, home run derby, and even ping pong could get fiercely competitive!
The Alan Dorsey Scholarship fund gives us a way to remember our dad and share his love of teaching basketball with all WCBA coaches and players. This scholarship will be awarded each year to a WCBA player who exemplifies the characteristics our dad would have looked for in a player on draft night.

WCBA is humbled by the outpouring of support for the scholarship and we wish to express our deep thanks as we both recognize and honor Alan Dorsey, as fine a husband, father, friend, and coach as we have had the privilege to partner with in our programs.
